Encoded files not identical on consecutive builds

I routinely update a couple of files in a very large project. However, it seems that ALL the resulting encoded files change in file size by a few bytes even though the source code for most files never changed. This makes it hard to use utilities like rsync to just send updated files back to my web server.

Im wondering if there is an encoding option or something I can do differently to work around this?

Hi

This is a security feature. The Encoder ensures that encoded data is entirely different on each encoding to make it impossible to analyse files by inspection as one hacking technique is to make minor, targetted changes, to raw data, and to analyse the nature of changes in the transformed files. Ensuring that files are always different, even if nothing changes, prevents that type of technique.

A feature on the todo list is to have a 4th option for when a target exists, so that only files that have changed are encoded. This would speed updates, and also work for your situation. One thing to note is that the Encoder preserves the access and modified times if possible, copying from the source file to target file. If you have a file synchroniser that works on timestamps alone, rather than checksums, then you may be able to optimise updates that way.
