Hi everyone,

just a short Question, will there be Support for SFTP and SSH Uploads?
It would be really nice. I think when you use some parts of PuTTY, including there Pageant, and Proxy Support it would be a really good Product, and it couldn't be so hard to Implement ;o)

FTP shouldn't be used IMHO, so SSH would be a great improvment ...

Hi,

Absoutely. From day one, this has been planned, and in parallel with the release development, we've been working on this. Putty in our view isn't the best route to go as it's not written as a library, and although doable, there are better options. Whilst good, we also found the CURL library for FTP not to be perfect, and so in reworking CURL internals, we made various performance improvements and bug fixes.

We've actually been waiting to see how long it would be before anyone mentioned this As stated, it's part of our strategy for the product, but it seems to be the case that most end users use FTP servers, and many have only FTP access. So with FTP being the most prevalent, it was the first and most crucial thing to offer, but we're not stopping at that.

It will be in version 2.1 or later. There's no fixed date for that release yet.

This isn't a feature yet, but is planned for a future version. Putty isn't the way to go, but another ssh library that we're using and enhancing for another development is promising, and likely to form the backbone of the future ssh support.

I agree that putty isn't the solution, I would have used a library like http://www.bitvise.com/sshlib.html

This is a big feature for a next release. Most end users with shared hosts, which is most end users, have FTP and so that's the most important feature to support. However ssh would be a nice feature for completeness and top of the list for new features.

I see that there is a "enable https" option, is this the new sftp/ssl feature, or does it have some other function? I enabled it, built a new installation, and can't figure out how to connect through sftp, is there something I'm missing?

sftp isn't in there yet. The https option is for support of users with https only web servers. Most users will obviously have http access to their web server, and the increase in installer size for https support is unnecessary. However, we did come across a case where an end user only had https access to their domain, and so added the https support as an option to cover that scenario whilst keeping installer size down for the majority.

Any prediction on when you'll be adding sftp support? This is THE major feature that is lacking. I come across customers from time to time who refuse to use ftp because of security.

No prediction currently. Having an archive version of packages is still advisable because there can be users who don't use windows clients, or who simply prefer to install an archive directly rather than use an installer, which can include users with full server access (who are generally those with ssh/sftp). With full server access it can be more efficient to upload and unpack a tar.gz file locally plus making any chmods locally (and you could even give a shell script to do that), but installing is much more of a pain and complicated for users with only FTP access (which is most shared users), and thiis is where IPF really delivers the benefits.
