I'm thinking about buying IonCube to protect some of my scripts. however, I'm not an expert on editing PHP.ini files, and my users aren't either.

Ioncube still might be worth it if a sizeable percentage of servers are just ready to run Ioncube protected scripts, with no configuration needed.

So my question is... What percentage of servers are ready to go with IonCube protected scripts, no editing of PHP.ini needed, no loaders needed?

It may depend on who you ask. When this topic occasionally comes up in forums such as webhostingtalk or sitepoint, some posters say that the Loader is installed on most servers, and while everyone will have their own experience, the Loader is an industry standard and one way or another most hosts probably can support it (and in general there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to other than apathy). That said, we do get a trickle of people asking for help with installation so it's not installed on every host, but this would be a small percentage of the total user base of encoded files. Some hosts who don't have it installed by default, for example GoDaddy, do support custom php.ini files and so the end user can install the Loader themselves.
